More on Lewes

  • The area was first settled in 1631 by the Dutch. They called it Zwaanendael. This settlement was short-lived and succeeding ones were troubled with conflict with the English.
  • The English took over in 1680 and the area became known as New Deale. It was William Penn, who had been given the Delaware colonies, who renamed it Lewes, after the English town of Lewes in Sussex.
  • Lewes was incorporated in 1818.
  • In the years after WWII, the town relied heavily on the menhaden trade,which declined in the 1960s. Today, Lewes’ biggest industry is tourism.
  • Between 1990 and 2000, Lewes’ population was over 700. By 2000, the town had become home to more than 2,900.
  • Residents have quick access to nearby Cape Henlopen State Park’s over 5,000 acres of natural beauty, including long, uncrowded stretches of pristine beaches. Here you can swim, have a picnic, go bird watching, or simply reconnect with nature.
  • Lewes has a wealth of historic attractions, many of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Zwaanendael Museum, the Fisher-Martin House, the Colonel David Hall House, Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lewes Presbyterian Church, and the Ryves Holt House (said to be the oldest house in Delaware).
  • The city has a marina and a dock. Both the Canal front Park Marina and the Otis B. Smith City Dock are on the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal, accessible through Front Street.
  • Lewes’ fishing pier extends a quarter mile into the bay and includes a picnic pavilion and bait and tackle shop.
  • The Cape May-Lewes Ferry connects the city with Cape May, New Jersey. It takes around 70 minutes to cross the bay.

  • Lazy Susan’s Hot Fat Crabs serves large heaps of shellfish. Try their steamed crabs or their fried oysters.
  • Come to Honey’s Farm Fresh for some fresh seafood, along with natural juice and drinks. The menu consists of smoked salmon and jumbo crab cakes.
  • Touch of Italy in Downtown Lewes is one of the most popular restaurants in the area. They serve pizza, pasta, and focaccia.
  • Agave Restaurant & Bar has over 70 varieties of tequila, along with margaritas and sangria. Take a sip of their La Pera while munching on some Super Nachos.
  • If you’re looking for women’s apparel and beach wear, try Blooming Boutique.
  • Marsha’s is a great stop for home furnishings, hand-made jewelry and one-of-a-kind clothes.
